Regenerative Architecture

This workshop (Fagligt introduktionsforløb) was a collaboration with GXN (3XN's research department), where we were to rethink the Godsbanen area in order to make it more sustainable. This project deals with biodiversity and water purification.

Our proposal takes it point of departure in the history site. It was originally wetland, before it was turned into a goods station - which ended polluting the soil on the site. The goods station is now turned into a cultural center, and the railway area is mostly abandoned. The proposal is to give the place back to the nature by redirecting a part of Aarhus River, and create a wetland outside Godsbanen. The wetland vegetation cleanses the soil and creates a new green area within the city.

A plant school should also be located on site, where wastewater and rainwater is cleaned and used as nutrition. The trees grown here can be exported to other places in the city. Godsbanen should also be used as an educational center for the natural wetland, where school children can go on excursions and use the great hall as auditorium.

Acquired Techniques

The outcome of the Acquired Techniques workshop with the theme "Unfolding Spatial Mechanisms". A collage made from a drawing of a machine was made, trying to develop depth through movement. It is a combination of acetone print and print on trace paper. After this, a drawing investigating the mechanical and moving parts was made on trace paper.

Modelphotos investigating the relation between the movement of the mechanical part, light conditions, and spatial qualities.

Covering [P4] Video for presentation

Final video to shown at the presentation and at the exhibition at Rambøll. It shows the process from the preliminary experiments to final design. The spatial transformation due to interaction with weather phenomena is one of the main points.

Covering [P3] Final booklet

This is the final booklet on phase 3, which explain the process and development of the design and models.

Covering [P3] Ambience renderings

Showing the design exposed to the two chosen phenomena.

Covering [P3] Final model - single funnel & structural field

Final model of a single funnel. Scale 1:2,5 (Funny scale due to the dimensions of the working space). The model is hexagon shaped and 2 meters high. It is made from polyester fabric, nylon cord and wood. The model of the structural field is next to it.

Model of structural field in scale 1:25. It consist of 9 funnels. One funnel is turned upside down, and held in place by tensegrity.

Covering [P3] Probe

Probe testing how to tension the wire and how hard it can be tensioned.
Notice that the MDF is bending, so the final model will need a frame to reinforce it.

Video showing how the wires are tensioned. Notice the sound, when "playing" on the strings.

Covering [P3] small tangent

While sketching on and developing the structural field, the two funnel-shaped models were put together in different ways, to see if they should overlap each other, if one should be higher than the other etc. At one point, the two models were put on top of each other, creating a tall structure with an exiting space on the inside. The potential of the idea was examined, but it was later discarded again.

Small video describing "sketching process".

Covering [P3] Precipitation Catchers Booklet

Booklet describing investigation programme. This includes descriptions of parameters framing the project, situation, time-scale, the chosen structure (which is a pre-stressed membrane), and the four probes and/or experiments.

Covering [P3] Investigating snow and rain on membrane

Experiments on how water and snow (powder sugar) will collect and slide off of the funnel shaped pre-stressed membrane. Notice how the water droplets reflect the light, and how the powder sugar changes the space under the structure and the light.

Covering [P2] Final model

The final model is a hybrid between the Glass Pavilion by Bruno Taut and MyZeil by Studio Fuksas. It does not represent the buildings, but it is an experiment that examines the two different structural principles. Notice how the structure and the space underneath it changes.

Comparison of the two stages.

Instant Aarhus - [Culture vs Nature]·

Booklet on our inflatable structure - a small dome with a smaller inflatable cube inside. The sides of the dome are a bit sloppy and one will not feel comfortable in this space, the violence of the nature, especially the wind, will be tangible here - but once inside the cube everything is calm and safe.
